Superboy 1988

television_subpage_superboy_1988_2

SuperboyA television series that aired for four seasons; from October 8, 1988 to May 17, 1992. It was brought to the TV screen by executive producers Ilya and Alexander Salkind. They are the same producers of the first three Superman films and the 1984 Supergirl movie. The first season of the show went on the air on October 1988 with John Haymes Newton as Superboy/Clark Kent and the lovely Stacy Haiduk as his love interest Lana Lang.

The show’s storylines for Season 1 revolved around Clark/Superboy and Lana in college at Shuster University in Siegelville Florida (a nod to Superman's creators, Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel). However, during its second season drastic changes took place. For instance, John Haymes Newton was replaced with actor Gerard Christopher in the lead role. Also, a lot more comic book characters were introduced into the show. The third season saw even more changes, such as the show's title officially becoming The Adventures of Superboy and the setting shifting from 'Shuster University' to ‘The Bureau for Extra-Normal Matters’ in Capitol City Florida, where Clark and Lana became interns. It also developed darker and more mature storylines.

The fourth and final season maintained its darker look and feel as well as generating high rating numbers. Hence, there is some controversy as to why the show was cancelled after its fourth season in 1992. The Salkinds were planning a fifth and sixth season for the show, but a lien was filed by Warner Bros against the series wanting all the film and television rights to Superman back under their control. At that time, the Salkinds had rights to Superboy, Supergirl and Superpup, which had allowed them to spearhead the Superboy TV Show in the first place. This is where it gets complicated because although Superboy was a Salkind production of a Time Warner property, it was distributed in the United States by the Viacom corporation, which later merged with Paramount in 1994. Therefore, because of the number of different companies involved in Superboy and due to legal issues between Salkind and Time Warner which took time to settle, the series has not re-aired on American television since its initial syndicated run. After Warner Brothers put the lien in place and regained the film and television rights from the Salkinds, the company produced Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. It is therefore believed by some that Warner put the lien in place only to open the door for Lois & Clark, not wanting two Superman-related TV series on the air at the same time.
