Superman: The Movie - A superhero film based on the DC Comics character of Superman. It was produced by Alexander Salkind, Ilya Salkind and Pierre Spengler and directed by Richard Donner. It stars the late Christopher Reeve as Superman; a talented actor who truly embodied the heroic spirit of this iconic character on and off the screen. Lana Lang, played by Diane Sherry, makes a brief but very memorable appearance in the beginning of the film.
Summary: Lana Lang’s motion picture debut takes place in the football field of Smallville High. We see a young Clark Kent, played by Jeff East, taking care of some football equipment as he stares out into the field. We soon see what has caught his eye as Lana Lang wearing a Smallville High cheerleading outfit appears on screen obviously having some trouble carrying and accommodating a handful of cheerleading pom-poms. Clark quickly runs to her aid and tells her not to bother with them, that he will take them in with the other equipment. There is an obvious spark and mutual attraction between them which is displayed throughout their interaction. Lana thanks Clarkand invites him to join the rest of the group in listening to some records over at Mary Ellen’s house. Clark can hardly contain himself as he eagerly accepts her invitation. Lana smiles as she is equally happy of Clark's agreement to come along.
Unfortunately, their special moment gets interrupted by a fellow classmate and football player named Brad, played by Brad Flock. He is obviously jealous of Clark and Lana’s close interaction and claims that “ Kent can’t make it”, because he has “a lot of work to do.” Clark is confused because he had just finished stacking all of the equipment, but as he looks over he notices that everything had been knocked down. Lana sees what Brad had done and sadness and disappointment sweeps over her face. Lana’s other classmates, who had been waiting in the car; begin yelling at her to hurry up. Lana is reluctant to go. Brad noticing this grabs Lana’s arm and pulls her away from Clark insisting that they have to go; that Clark has equipment to clean up. She says “Bye Clark” as she is being dragged away by Brad. Clark looks on with frustration evident on his face. As they drive away, Clark's anger reaches a boiling point and hits one of the pom-poms to the floor.
He then angrily grabs a football and super-punts it off into the distance. Next, we see Clark super-running and racing a train. He catches up to the train, surpasses it, and leaps across its path as he yells "yahoo!" He continues to super-run down the main road toward his house. Just then the car with Lana and all of her classmates reaches the main road and they see Clark casually leaning against an old car. They stop and Lana looks at him with a surprised smile on her face and exclaims "Clark!" Brad then asks Clark how he got there so fast to which he replies “I ran.”
Superman: The Movie/Lana Lang Trivia:
*This marks Lana Lang's motion picture debut!
*Jeff East's voice was dubbed. Christopher Reeve's voice was used instead of Jeff East's voice for the theatrical release.
*There is a missing Smallville scene involving a slightly longer version of the conversation between Clark and Lana. In the missing scene Lana says "I think you are the nicest guy in the whole school." Clark shyly responds "Thanks *pauses* of course it is part of the job being team manager and all." Lana coyly smiles and then Clark says "But I'd do it for you anyway." They share a moment and the scene continues with the one included in the film (described above).
