'Beauty and the Beast' Pilot Script Reviews

I was cleaning out some old computer files and stumbled upon a couple of links reviewing 'Beauty and the Beast's' pilot script. This was during the time I was looking for anything on Kristin Kreuk's, then, 'new' project and way before the 'BATB' pilot aired. Luckily, the links still work and thought it be fun to share. Especially, since in one of the reviews it indicates Vincent's BFF not as J.T., but rather T.J.! If the original script indeed had J.T. as T.J. and not an error from the reviewer, it makes Tess's name mix-up towards J.T. on the show a whole lot funnier!

The CW's contemporary reboot of "Beauty & The Beast" will be flashy, funky and less schmaltzy than the '80s original. But will the network be able to find actors as adorably apt as Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton to play the title characters? I think that's ultimately what it's success or failure hinges on...Years later, [Catherine and Vincent] will meet again under different circumstances. Catherine is now a feisty, slightly troubled (She can't keep a relationship; struggles with her mother's passing) New York City cop who comes across Vincent, the beast, at an old abandoned chemical warehouse.

She's there to speak to a man named TJ, whose car was spotted at a crime scene nights before — a young woman was poisoned. Dead. T.J isn't there, but instead, she speaks to his 'roomie'... who remains shrouded in shadows for the most part....

Conclusion: How many episodes will it take for the young copper to own up to her feelings to Vincent though? Whatever the case, classy, fun writing and a nice job at 'hipping' up a well-worn but always-effective tale. In some ways this reminded me less of the original "Beauty and the Beast" and more of say, a TV spin- off of Tim Burton's "Batman" (Catherine being Vicki Vale, Vincent being the hidden-away Bruce Wayne, secret superhero) crossed with a bit of "Magnum PI".

If it doesn't get too bogged down in that "villain of the week" template that the pilot hints at, and concentrates more on the relationships between the key characters, then this could be one of the year's highlights. If the actors cast as are solid as the writing team, The CW might have it's new "Buffy" or "Smallville"."

"...What proceeds is a light, banter-y crime procedural with strong character elements. There's an investigation, the murder is solved (are you surprised?), Vincent and Catherine meet and have sexual tension... though I'm not sure if it's UST. The script gives no indication of what, exactly, this "beast" looks like. As far as I really know, he's fast and strong and reclusive and has some rage issues... but not incredibly inhuman (and there is no secret utopian underground society). So I'm kind of picturing a werewolf at this point and not some grotesque monster that needs to hide in the shadows.

The backstory there is that he's been experimented on, so he's got some genetic mutations. There's a conspiracy/company (Muirfield) behind it, and he's trying to stay off their radar, but Catherine accidentally alerts them because Vincent (who tried to save the murder victim's life) left some trace DNA evidence that matches exactly to Catherine's mother's murder... and it's not entirely human.

CW needs to crack its version of a crime procedural (yes, yes, they have Supernatural). This may be it, with its mythical Gothic romance trappings. I won't pretend this is groundbreaking, but what it is... is enjoyable. I love the characters Cooper & Levin have created. There's a comfort and familiarity and breeziness to the way they talk and interact on the page and, ultimately, I think that's why a lot of people like the TV they like. Hopefully that translates to the screen..."

'Beauty and the Beast' Thursday!

Things really 'heated up' during last week's 'Beauty and the Beast' episode, "Playing with Fire!" Catherine and Vincent lying to each other and working apart - Not Good!  Catherine and Tess working together as partners - Very Good!  Lesson learned: Catherine and Vincent need to work together! In the wise words of J.T., "Imagine what you two can accomplish if you were actually working together!"

Also, Beast finds himself a new home or is it a mansion? This is were the fantasy in this show really shines because there is no way you would find an abandoned 'home' like that in New York! ;p Tonight, it appears we'll be seeing the green-eyed monster of jealousy surging through our 'Beast's' veins...this should be interesting lol In the meantime, enjoy the 'nicer' side of our beloved Beast in this great 'BATB' Comic page for 'Anniversary' from 'BATBnation'!

Beauty and the Beast 'CW Cincinnati' Kristin Kreuk & Jay Ryan Video Interview

Oldie But, Goodie: Kristin Kreuk and Jay Ryan were interviewed by Jen Dalton from TheCW Cincinnati, Ohio station back in October of last year. In the interview, they talked about their roles in 'Beauty and the Beast' and their fan experience at ComicCon. Kristin also talked about her martial arts skills and Lana Lang!

YouTube Link   [Credit: ViolettkaVi Channel]

"Jen Dalton: Kristin, you're no stranger obviously to TheCW we saw you for many seasons on 'Smallville' as Lana Lang. So, this is very familiar territory doing kind of a supernatural kind of show for you but, this also seems very different than your Lana character. She was very sweet. This character although may seem sweet, but is also very seems kind of gritty and strong and I know you had to do some martial arts in the show as well. What kind of training did you have to do to prepare for this role?

Kristin Kreuk: Well, its funny because I....Yeah, Lana was incredibly sweet and wonderful and all those things and I think for me I grew up doing martial arts. Like I was in Karate from like 3rd grade to 10th grade and I also you know, did gymnastics and dance. So, all of that training is coming to play for Catherine for me. I get to just...and I did this movie 'Street Fighter' as well, so I did a bunch of training for that. So, all of those things, that I am actually fairly capable with, I get to utilize which I didn't as much with Lana, although I did a little bit."

One of my favorite Kristin and Jay interviews!
